Prog Analyst

Prog Analyst is my YouTube channel, the goal of which is to analyze in depth a variety of progressive rock songs from a number of different artists to understand what makes these songs work, what makes them great, and also to identify some key characteristics of different prog artists to uncover what makes them unique and defines their sound.  To the right you'll see some of my personal favorite videos I've done so far.

"Long Distance Runaround" by Yes

To really get into the arrangement of this song, I had the challenge of transcribing each individual instrument.  It was a lot of work, but it really paid off to see how all the different parts come together.  Click the image below to check it out!

"The Start of Something Beautiful" by Porcupine Tree

For this song, I transcribed the important rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic parts throughout the song.  It's really cool to see how the phrases in the verse and chorus are structured, and to see the way the different rhythms interlock over the different time signatures.  Click the image below to check it out!

"Firth of Fifth" Piano Intro by Genesis

It took an 11-minute video just to talk about the first minute of the song!  From the changing time signatures to the complicated harmony, there was so much to discuss about one of prog rock's most iconic piano solos.  Click the image below to check it out!
